The course I played with the Wilson’s was 6,019 yards, has a rating of 69.1 and a 121 slope. There is no 5-iron, which I thought would be annoying, but not necessary for the kinds of courses I’ll likely play with them. These are currently $157 on Amazon and I bought them because they were the cheapest. They were manufactured on the other side of the planet. The strap was on backwards, but what’evs. It also comes with a great bag that is really light weight. The Wilson set has Driver, 3-wood, some kind of 5-hybrid, 6-PW irons, and a putter. That is my baseline to compare the two sets of el cheapo clubs.īoth courses that I played were considerably shorter and easier than my home course. For my past 10-rounds at and around my home with my own clubs, I hit 59% of fairways, 44% of greens in regulation, 14% scrambling, and average 33.8 puts per round. I use GolfShot and kept track of my shots and did so with the Wilson and the Callaway sets too. I play a Callaway Epic driver, Callaway Razr irons (2HY, 3HY, 4 - PW - yes I should probably upgrade) with stiff shafts, Titelist Vokey 52 degree gap wedge, TaylorMade Milled Grind 56 degree sandy, and a Ping Anser IsoPur putter (it’s old, pretty, and works). It isn’t an easy track, but it’s no Bethpage Black either. My home course plays 6,337 yards, has a rating of 71.3, and a slope of 137. I am 45YO RH male, currently playing to a 10.7 index. So now I’m an expert in the cheapest clubs that you can get on Amazon. So I bought a set of the Wilson’s to keep on the east coast with my only requirements being a.) Are they cheap? b.) Will they work(ish)? c.) Can I have a better time with them than some hodgepodge of the random set of 25-year old clubs that you get at some of the courses my dad likes to play (think sub-$20 rounds).Ĭoincidentally, I traveled a few days later, played a course and the rental set was the Callaway Strata. He said one day “Why not get a set of clubs and keep them on the east coast in our garage?” Great idea, but I don’t have a grand to have a set of clubs sitting in his garage that I use half a dozen times a year. The downside for me is the cost of shipping clubs, taking clubs on planes, or renting clubs. So now, while we live on opposite coasts, I always try to get a round in with him when I’m in his area, roughly once every 2-months or so. 5-years ago, at the young age of 65 and entering retirement, he took up the game and loved it. He always scoffed and said that it is a game for the bourgeois. I’ve been trying to get my dad to play golf for 25-years. Usually these are the Wilson WGGC43000 (the marketing team was working overtime on that one) or the Callaway Strata Ultimate (serious, I need a job in golf marketing). Periodically on this sub, people ask about the boxed sets of clubs on Amazon. Great value on both sets, but Wilson’s are better value.
